Modern living means that we spend on average up to 90% of our time indoors.

For someone with an indoor allergy, that’s a lot of time being exposed to something which can make it difficult to breathe, sleep and restore, in a place which is supposed to be a sanctuary. Instead, the home becomes a hazard, rather than somewhere to take a breath from the external pressures of life. Often the bedroom has the worse air quality.  According to a recent survey by Allergy UK, for 81% of people affected by indoor allergies, the discomfort is year-round, with no respite from symptoms. For 25% of respondents, their indoor allergy has resulted in having to be hospitalised.

Yet, having an indoor allergy is costly to manage and not all households affected will have the means to buy and run multiple air purifiers.  There are also situations, where someone may not be the homeowner, and it can take a while for allergy reduction measures to buildings to happen e.g. mould management, increased ventilation etc.  Air purifiers can be helpful, especially in these circumstances, as they remove allergens from the indoor air environment.  This can make it easier sleep and can also mean that less time is spent cleaning to minimise exposure to an allergen.

Our bursary intends to support at least 100 households with a clear need for an air purifier to make their indoor environment safer for them.
